History:
Greg’s father was a dedicated marine and being as such he was determined to have his sons with him. Greg was an unofficial member of his father’s unit at the tender age of 13, but as soon as he was 18 he did everything in his power to make sure he became a marine. He was dedicated to ‘fighting the good fight’ and stayed that course until he turned 30. Every marine that met him was his brother and sister. He had the ability to immediately bond within almost everyone he ever met. HIs life was being a Marine, there was no other part of his life. Eat, Sleep, and Breathe as a Marine. However the higher ups always looked for new people to be at HQ (Headquarters). Greg, out of fear of being taken from active field duty made sure that he stayed in enough trouble to keep him form being promoted beyond Sergeant, but his mission success was unparalleled.
On his last mission he and his team were captured. A mole within the corps was the reason. One of their ‘brothers’ had betrayed them. Greg had managed to see the trap before it sprung and warned his men. This helped most of his team escape. Unfortunately he and 2 others were captured and tortured, but not before Greg put an end to the traitor. Being the highest ranking man there, and presumed to have information that would prove valuable, Greg was forced to watch the horrible acts that were done to his men. When the sick individuals would leave Sergeant Vanst repeated the same words. “You are heroes, I am honored to fight and die with you any day, but don’t give up. Never leave a man behind. They are coming for us.”
Greg was right, in three days time, a rescue team busted the enemy bunker wide open. It had taken the group this whole time to find the base, call in additional resources and inform HQ of the betrayal. By this point one of the men was dead, the other gravely wounded. Greg, who had refused to speak a word when the tormentors were around. Had also been included in the physical torture aspects. He couldn’t walk, his back wouldn’t straighten. One eye was swollen completely shut. He was bloody, burned, and covered in partially healed-infected wounds.
Greg was weak and an incredibly large guy. Though difficult to move the Marines managed to get the two out. They were rushed for EVAC and flown to the nearest medical post. The second Marine died of his injuries prior to arrival. Leaving Greg alone, as the soul survivor. Guilt and a slow recovery whittled away at his spirit, but he was still a Marine. He needed to be reunited with his team. When he was at last fit for follow up from his initial debrief, he was informed of two options. He could receive an Honorable discharge, deemed so by being declared mentally unfit to return to active duty. Or he could continue as a Marine, but one stationed at Star Fleet base. He would receive training, evaluations and though he would not be allowed to return to active field duty. His commanding officer was willing to pull strings, that, if deemed suitable, he would continue as a counselor, primarily for other Marines. His own experience in this area would assist PTS sufferers and those who struggle with things that no one, but a fellow Marine would understand.
It wasn’t easy, but he managed to earn the right to not only be a counselor for Marines, but was approved to be stationed on a Starship. His hope was that he could prove he was ready to “Get back on the horse”. Despite the earlier verdict of Post Traumatic Stress, he proved he could function in his duty and attacked this new job with that same Marine tenacity, he had with every mission he ever tackled.
Though his heart for the marines never faltered, he would do everything necessary to fulfill his assignment. Still he’d never he give up on returning, one day to active duty. True they had offered him to serve 8 years as a counselor so he would qualify for his full 20 years, but that wasn’t enough for him. He was a Marine for life, he would rather have been buried with his men than be told he couldn’t do his job any longer. At least he could still serve the Marines, so despite being a counselor to the whole ship, he would always have a special focus on his brother and sister Marines!
