History:
“As a child I had a very happy life with my mother. She taught me many things; how to read, write, how to defend myself as well as a great deal about medicine and treating injuries. She would read to me from her journals about her adventures. She was always there for me… until that day. I had finally asked her why my father had not come home to us. I knew what she had told me before, how he was protecting us and though he didn’t want to; he had to be away. I was thirteen and ready to know the full truth, but I wasn’t prepared for the answer I got.
My mom promised to tell me at dinner, so I grabbed my bow and went to hunt for our dinner. I couldn’t wait to hear the story at last. I was blessed to find a pheasant and upon my return I noticed something that made my heart sink. The front door was open with a paper pinned to it. I ran up to read the note my mother had left; it read:
“I’m sorry Sky, there has come an greater danger than I had expected. I cannot answer your questions at this time; in my room you will find a chest at the foot of the bed. Its contents are yours. To find the answers you seek you have a decision to make my son. I ask that you seek our friends nearby and learn what they have to teach you, before setting out on your journey. I know your heart all too well, it is like mine. You look to the sky… but you must learn to see the earth as well as the sky. When you have learned what you can spread your wings and fly. Our home and land will be cared for by those we trust; we will meet again!”
When I opened the chest I found; a sword I had never seen before today, a family heirloom that had a symbol of royalty upon it. With it lay a cloak made of feathers, light armor, the Bible that she and I had always read from, a pouch to carry supplies in and a journal with one entry; it had today’s date and stated “Today I received the gifts from my mother; she is gone, but promises to return.” I felt the air leave me as I sat upon my mom’s bed. I’m not sure how long I sat there, but only came to myself when I heard hoof beats. Outside were our friends, the ones mom had referenced in the letter. Apparently they had received word via a messenger bird not long ago and came to collect me.
It wasn’t difficult to leave my home, because it was only my mom that made it home. Thus I began my training from our friends; learning various skills beyond the ones my mom had taught me. She taught me survival and healing, but they taught me about the world. Though I was taught about surviving in nature; the world had changed in many ways. A sword alone couldn’t get you through it. You had to be smarter. My mother had read to me many books in my life, but since I had never lived in the places she read about some part of me saw it as a faraway place I would never see.
They taught me how to make money, how to fight beyond self-defense. Tactics beyond strategic thinking and when I was sixteen I left on my journey. I have much to learn and many answers to find out in the world, but I know this… my mom would not have left me if she didn’t believe in me. That and she promised she would see me again; I know she will keep her word.”
